Super Formula Race Calendar 2025
View all calendarsSuper Formula Overview
Super Formula is Japan's premier open-wheel racing series, widely regarded as the pinnacle of single-seater motorsport in the country. Established in 1973 as the All-Japan Formula 2000 Championship, it has evolved through various iterations, including Formula Two and Formula 3000, before adopting the Super Formula name in 2013.
The championship features high-performance cars equipped with 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 direct injection engines supplied by Toyota and Honda. These engines are paired with Dallara SF14 chassis, designed for agility and speed.
Races are traditionally held at six major national racing circuits in Japan: Suzuka Circuit, Fuji Speedway, Mobility Resort Motegi, Sportsland Sugo, Autopolis, and Okayama International Circuit. Each venue offers unique challenges, contributing to the series' reputation for competitive racing.
Super Formula serves as a vital stepping stone for drivers aspiring to compete in international motorsport, including Formula One. The series has produced notable alumni such as André Lotterer, Kazuki Nakajima, Kamui Kobayashi, Stoffel Vandoorne, and Pierre Gasly.
In 2024, the championship introduced the Dallara SF23 chassis, enhancing the cars' performance and entertainment value. The season featured nine races across seven weekends, with Sho Tsuboi of Docomo Team Dandelion Racing securing his first Super Formula Drivers' Championship.
Super Formula continues to be a cornerstone of Japanese motorsport, offering thrilling races and serving as a platform for emerging talent in the world of open-wheel racing.
