Alessandro Zanardi

Alessandro "Alex" Zanardi, born on October 23, 1966, is an Italian racing legend whose career is defined by both triumph and extraordinary resilience. Zanardi began his racing journey in karts at the age of 13, progressing through Formula 3 and Formula 3000, where he quickly demonstrated his talent by winning his debut race. His Formula 1 debut came in 1991 with Jordan, followed by stints with Minardi and Lotus. While F1 success eluded him, he showcased promise, notably scoring a point for Lotus at Interlagos in 1993.

Zanardi's career reached new heights in the CART series in the late 1990s. Driving for Chip Ganassi Racing, he secured the CART championship in both 1997 and 1998, amassing 15 wins and becoming one of the series' most popular figures. This success paved the way for a return to Formula 1 with Williams in 1999, though the partnership proved challenging, and he returned to CART. A horrific accident in 2001 at the Lausitzring resulted in the amputation of both of his legs, an event that would have ended most careers.

However, Zanardi's story is one of unparalleled determination. Less than two years after his accident, he returned to racing in the European Touring Car Championship and later the World Touring Car Championship, notching four victories. Beyond motorsport, Zanardi became a Paralympic handcycling champion, winning multiple gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games. His achievements transcend sport, making him an inspiration to millions. In June 2020, Zanardi suffered serious injuries in a handbike accident, but his legacy of courage and perseverance remains undimmed.
