GTA - GT Asia Series Overview

The GT Asia Series was a major sports car racing championship in the Asia-Pacific region, running from 2010 to 2017 and playing an important role in the development of GT racing in Asia. The series was open primarily to FIA GT3-specification cars, which formed the top class, while additional categories included Ferrari Challenge cars, Porsche Cup models, and older GT3 machinery, allowing a wide range of teams and drivers to compete. Promoted by Motorsport Asia Ltd as part of the Asian Festival of Speed and sanctioned by the FIA, GT Asia combined professional organization with strong regional character. The championship experienced steady growth after its launch, expanding from an initial grid of around a dozen cars to peak entries of more than 26 cars per event. Races were held at leading circuits across China, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand, attracting competitors from across Asia as well as international entrants. In 2016, the series strengthened its global relevance through a collaboration with the Asian Le Mans Series, creating the Michelin Asia GT Challenge, which offered a pathway to the 24 Hours of Le Mans for successful GT3 teams. In 2017, GT Asia merged with the China GT Championship, marking the end of the series as a standalone championship and laying the foundation for the modern GT World Challenge Asia that followed.
