Supercars Championship Overview

The Supercars Championship, currently known as the Repco Supercars Championship, is the premier touring car racing series in Australasia, encompassing Australia and New Zealand. Recognized globally as one of the leading touring car categories, it showcases high-performance, V8-powered vehicles competing across various circuits. The championship originated as the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) in 1960, initially decided over a single race. Over the decades, it evolved into a multi-round series, adopting the 'V8 Supercars' moniker in 1997 to reflect its focus on V8-powered sedans. In 2016, the series was rebranded as the 'Supercars Championship' to accommodate a broader range of engine configurations, though the V8 engines have remained predominant. Traditionally, the championship featured a fierce rivalry between the Ford Falcon and the Holden Commodore. In recent years, the series has diversified, with the introduction of models like the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang under the Gen3 regulations. These regulations aim to enhance driver safety, improve racing dynamics, and ensure greater road relevance of the competing vehicles. The championship encompasses a variety of race formats, from short sprint races to endurance events. The calendar features iconic races such as the Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama, renowned as one of the most challenging endurance races globally. Other significant events include the Adelaide 500 and the Sandown 500, each attracting substantial spectator attendance. The 2025 season introduces a revamped championship structure, incorporating a Finals Series to determine the overall champion. This new format includes a Sprint Cup, an Enduro Cup featuring endurance races like The Bend 500 and the Bathurst 1000, and a three-event Finals Series where top contenders compete for the title. The Supercars Championship enjoys a robust following, with events broadcast in numerous countries and average event attendance often exceeding 100,000 spectators. The series' blend of high-speed racing, manufacturer rivalries, and accessible fan engagement continues to bolster its status as a premier motorsport competition.
