- New GT4 Sprint Series to be launched in four rounds for Chinese market
- F1 China Grand Prix support event and Beijing street circuit confirmed as season opener
A new GT4 championship in China: SRO GT Cup, will officially launch in the 2025 season.
Starting in March, the new series will feature four rounds of eight 30-minute sprints, two races per race weekend, with one driver per car. The new season will kick off at the Shanghai International Circuit, where the SRO GT Cup will be one of the official support events for the F1 World Championship Chinese Grand Prix. The event will then join the GT World Challenge Asia presented by AWS on the Beijing Street Circuit.
The venues for the remaining two rounds of the SRO GT Cup’s inaugural season will be announced in early 2025. FIA Bronze or Silver drivers can compete in any currently homologated GT4 car. SRO’s renowned Balance of Performance system and sporting environment will also ensure the event is held to the same standards as other SRO championships around the world.
SRO expects to have 20 cars in the first season. Registration for the event will officially open on January 9. Benjamin Franassovici, General Manager of SRO Motorsport Group Asia, said: "This will be a new chapter for SRO in Asia and in China in particular.
Today, many of the country's largest teams and most experienced drivers compete in the GT World Challenge Asia Cup and other events, but China remains a huge market for aspiring gentleman drivers, young stars with potential and domestic teams looking to compete close to home. Last month's Macau race, which attracted more than 25 GT4 cars, is a great example of this."
"
I believe that the SRO GT Cup format and high-profile schedule will provide a compelling and accessible option for competitors." The results of the event will also be counted towards SRO's GT4 Manufacturers Ranking, which will be awarded to the world's best performing GT4 brand at the end of each season. The SRO GT Cup will form the Asian region together with the Japan Cup, and will be scored together with the continental and national events in Europe, America and Australia.
