Nelson Piquet

Nelson Piquet Souto Maior, born August 17, 1952, is a Brazilian former racing driver and businessman. He is celebrated as one of Formula One's greatest drivers, having secured three World Drivers' Championship titles in 1981, 1983, and 1987. Throughout his 14 seasons in Formula One, from 1978 to 1991, Piquet participated in 204 races and won 23 Grands Prix. Piquet's Formula One journey began in 1978, and he quickly rose through the ranks, showcasing his talent and determination.

Before entering Formula One, Piquet initially pursued a career in tennis, even being considered a promising junior prospect. However, his passion shifted to motorsports, leading him to karting. To conceal his racing activities from his father, he competed under the name "Piket." He won the Brazilian national karting championship in 1971 and 1972. In 1976, he won the Formula Vee Brazil championship. Following advice from Emerson Fittipaldi, he moved to Europe, where he broke Jackie Stewart's record for the most wins in a season during the British Formula Three Championship in 1978.

Piquet's Formula One career saw him driving for Ensign, McLaren, Brabham, Williams, Lotus, and Benetton. His time at Brabham was particularly successful, where he secured his first two World Championships. His third title came with Williams in 1987, amidst a heated rivalry with teammate Nigel Mansell. After retiring from Formula One, Piquet explored other racing ventures, including an attempt at the Indianapolis 500. He suffered severe leg injuries in a practice crash in 1992, ending that endeavor. He also participated in sports car racing, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
