Tetsuya Makino is a Japanese racing driver born on June 28, 1997. He currently competes in Super GT for Team Kunimitsu and in the Super Formula Championship for Dandelion Racing, driving for Honda Motor Company. Makino's career began with karting in 2004, where he achieved significant success, including winning the All-Japan Karting Championship's FS-125 class in 2011. He transitioned to formula racing in 2014, dominating the Super FJ and JAF Formula 4 categories.
In 2016, Makino debuted in Japanese Formula 3, securing multiple podium finishes. That same year, he participated in select Super GT races, achieving a podium finish in Thailand. Progressing through the ranks, he competed in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and FIA Formula 2 Championship, even winning a Formula 2 race at Monza in 2018, becoming the first Japanese driver to win a F2 Race 1 where the starting grid is determined by qualifying.
Since 2019, Makino has been a prominent figure in Japan's domestic racing scene. In 2020, partnering with Naoki Yamamoto, he won the GT500 class championship in Super GT. In 2021, despite an illness that sidelined him for part of the season, he earned the Super GT World Awards Shinichi Yamaji Memorial Award for Comeback Driver of the Year. As of 2024, he continues to be a strong contender in both Super GT and Super Formula, demonstrating his skill and determination on the track.
