Hunter McElrea, born on November 21, 1999, is a rising star in the world of motorsport. The New Zealander, born in Los Angeles, California, currently competes in the IMSA SportsCar Championship for TDS Racing. Motorsport runs deep in his family, with his grandfather and father both being accomplished racers. Hunter started karting at the young age of seven, before progressing to single-seaters at 16, competing in Formula Ford championships in both Australia and New Zealand. In 2018, he became the first non-Australian driver since 1985 to win the Australian Formula Ford title.
McElrea's career progressed through the Road to Indy program, a ladder system designed to develop talent for the IndyCar Series. He achieved success in the U.S. F2000 National Championship and the Indy Pro 2000 Championship, before moving to Indy Lights (now Indy NXT). In 2022, he earned three pole positions, two race wins, and the Rookie of the Year title in Indy Lights. He finished as Vice-Champion in Indy NXT in 2023.
In 2024, McElrea transitioned to sports car racing, joining TDS Racing for the IMSA Endurance Cup in the LMP2 category. He also made his IndyCar debut at the Toronto Street race with Dale Coyne Racing, demonstrating impressive speed by being the fastest rookie in practice. Although a DNF hampered his debut, McElrea proved he has the potential to be a regular in IndyCar. McElrea secured the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup (LMP2) in 2024.
