Tatsuya Kataoka, born on May 1, 1975, in Aichi, Japan, is a highly accomplished Japanese racing driver. Kataoka began his racing journey with go-karts at the age of 12. He then attracted attention by winning the FSA class of the Japanese Kart Championship for two consecutive years. In 2000, he entered Formula Toyota Racing School and was selected as the first scholarship student. The following year, he competed in Formula Toyota and took second place in the series. Starting in 2002, he participated in the All Japan F3 Championship as an FTRS support driver, and took third place in the series in 2003. He also participated in the Macau Grand Prix that year.
Kataoka currently competes in the Super GT series for Goodsmile Racing with Team UKYO, showcasing his skill in the GT300 class. He is a three-time champion in the GT300 class, having won in 2009, 2014, and 2017. Before joining Goodsmile Racing, Kataoka gained experience with teams like Sigmatech Racing, Toyota Team TOM'S, Team LeMans, and Racing Project Bandoh. Throughout his career, he has secured 10 wins in Super GT. Beyond Super GT, Kataoka has raced in Formula Nippon, achieving a personal best of 2nd place at Fuji in 2005.
In addition to his driving career, Kataoka is involved in driver development, serving as the principle of the Formula Toyota Racing School (FTRS). He also acts as Team Principal for KDDI TGM GP TGR-DC in Super Formula, and TKRI Matsunaga Construction in Super Taikyu.
