Darrell Ross

Darrell Ross is a racing driver hailing from New Zealand, with a career spanning several decades and continents. Ross began his racing journey in 1958, quickly becoming a regular competitor in New Zealand's racing scene. In 1962, he participated in the New Zealand Grand Prix at Ardmore, sharing the track with legends like Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, and Bruce McLaren. It was around this time that he acquired a Lotus 18 Formula Junior car, racing it extensively. Reg Parnell, then managing the BRW Racing Team, recognized Ross's potential and advised him to pursue his career in England.

In 1962, Ross took this advice and ventured to England, securing a spot in the Gemini Racing Team as the number two driver in Formula Junior by 1963. He competed at renowned circuits such as Goodwood Park, Silverstone, and Oulton Park. However, his time in England was marred by a significant accident during practice for the Aintree 200, where a suspension failure led to a high-speed crash. Despite the setback, Ross continued to race until 1966 when he returned to New Zealand.

In 1967, Ross ventured to the United States, driving a Lola T70 Mk2 for John Mecom. He competed against notable drivers like Jim Hall, Parnelli Jones, A.J. Foyt, and the Unser brothers, with Bruce McLaren and Denis Hulme also participating with the McLaren team. Ross found the prize money lucrative and was able to make a good living.
