Kageyama began his racing journey in Japan, achieving significant milestones early on. He clinched the All-Japan Formula Three Championship in 1989, showcasing his open-wheel talent. His versatility shone through in touring car racing, where he won the inaugural Japanese Grand Touring Car (JGTC) championship in 1993 driving a Nismo Nissan Skyline GT-R R32.
