Jacob Abel is an American racing driver born on March 9, 2001. Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, and now residing in Indianapolis, Indiana, Abel is set to make his IndyCar Series debut in 2025 with Dale Coyne Racing, driving the No. 51 Honda. This marks a significant step in his career, progressing through the ranks of the IndyCar development ladder.
Abel's journey in motorsports began in 2017 in the F4 United States Championship with Abel Motorsports, his family-run team. The following season, he gained experience in both Formula 4 and the F3 Americas Championship, achieving four podium finishes in F3 and finishing fourth overall in the championship. In 2019, he secured his first win in the series, with back-to-back victories at Road Atlanta. Before IndyCar, Abel competed in Indy NXT, showcasing his talent with three wins and three poles in 2024, ultimately finishing second in the championship.
Beyond the track, Abel enjoys cycling, skiing, tennis, and golf. He also played lacrosse in high school and attended Butler University in Indianapolis. His racing career also includes part-time competition in the GT World Challenge America with Racers Edge Motorsports and an IMSA SportsCar Championship event with Compass Racing. Abel secured his first GT3 victory in the GT World Challenge America at Watkins Glen.
