Gommendy began his professional journey in French Formula Three in 2000, quickly establishing himself as a talent to watch. A significant early achievement was winning the prestigious Macau Grand Prix in 2002, the same year he clinched the French F3 Championship. He also joined the FFSA French Team, mentored by Jean Alesi, which aimed to promote young French talents.

Gommendy's career progressed through Eurocup Formula Renault V6 and the World Series by Nissan, demonstrating consistent performance. He then ventured into GP2, securing a contract with Williams F1.
