Álvarez began his racing career in his native Argentina, competing in Formula Renault Argentina in 2001 and 2002. His talent quickly became apparent, and in 2003, he won the World Series Lights championship driving for the Meycom team. In 2005, Álvarez took a significant step forward, participating in the inaugural GP2 Series season with Campos Racing. While he only scored 4.5 points that year, the experience gained at this level was invaluable.
