James Hinchcliffe, born on December 5, 1986, is a Canadian race car driver. Hinchcliffe is currently competing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship driving the No. 9 Lamborghini for Pfaff Motorsports. Beyond the track, he shares his expertise as a commentator for FOX Sports and F1TV. Hinchcliffe is most well known for his time in the IndyCar Series.
Hinchcliffe's journey to IndyCar included racing in the F2000 Series, Formula BMW, Star Mazda, A1 Grand Prix, Champ Car Atlantic, and Indy Lights. He made his IndyCar debut in 2011 and raced full-time until 2021. Over eleven seasons, he participated in 161 races, achieving 18 podium finishes and securing six victories. Some of those wins were with Andretti Autosport and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. A major setback occurred in 2015 during practice for the Indianapolis 500 when a suspension failure resulted in a crash that nearly cost him his life. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, he recovered and earned pole position for the following year's Indy 500.
In early 2020, Hinchcliffe rejoined Andretti Autosport for a three-race deal and later filled in for the remainder of the season. In 2021, he drove the No. 29 car for Andretti Autosport, finishing 20th in the points standings. Later that year, he stepped back from full-time racing to join NBC Sports as an IndyCar commentator. He was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2024, becoming the youngest inductee at age 37.
