Van der Helm's career began in karting, where he achieved considerable success, including World, European, and Netherlands Championships in the same year. Transitioning to single-seaters, he competed in the Formula 4 UAE Championship and the Spanish F4 Championship in 2019, showcasing his potential with multiple podiums and a win. In 2020, he participated in the Toyota Racing Series, securing a race victory, before stepping up to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2021 with MP Motorsport.
