David Empringham, born on December 28, 1963, is a highly accomplished Canadian auto racing driver with a career spanning over three decades. Hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Empringham began his racing journey in 1987, quickly establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with in various racing series. He is a two-time Toyota Atlantic Champion (1993, 1994), a one-time Indy Lights Champion (1996), and a two-time Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Champion (2005, 2012), showcasing his versatility and skill across different racing disciplines.
Empringham's early career saw him competing in the Spenard/David Formula 2000 series and the GM Motorsport series, where he was teammates with Canadian racing legend Richard Spenard. He also gained experience in the IMSA Firestone Firehawk series, Porsche Turbo Cup, and Formula Toyota Atlantic. His breakthrough came in the Toyota Atlantic Championship, where he secured back-to-back titles in 1993 and 1994, driving for CANASKA racing and BDJS racing teams respectively, with Canadian Tire as a sponsor. In 1996, he transitioned to Indy Lights, joining Player's/Forsythe Racing and winning the championship that year.
Beyond his championship successes, Empringham has demonstrated his talent in numerous endurance races, including the 24 Hours of Daytona. He won the 2003 24 Hours of Daytona. He was inducted into the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières Hall of Fame in 2007, solidifying his status as a racing legend in Canada. More recently, Empringham has participated in Time Attack events and has achieved runner-up positions at the World Time Attack Challenge in Sydney, Australia, in 2010 and 2011. He also works as a race car coach, sharing his extensive knowledge and experience with aspiring drivers.
